Stanford name removed from PGA stop in Memphis

PGA stop in Memphis to be known as St. Jude Classic for '09 with Stanford officially removed

The PGA Tour's stop in Memphis will be known as the St. Jude Classic for 2009, dropping its reference to the Stanford Financial Group, which is under investigation.

Tournament officials announced the name change Thursday. The move had been expected since federal authorities began investigating Stanford for investment and securities fraud.

The event had been called the Stanford St. Jude Championship the past two years following 21 years with FedEx as the tournament's title sponsor.

Justin Leonard will defend his title at the TPC at Southwind course June 10-14, a week before the U.S. Open.
