Briton McDowell wins U.S. Open to end European drought

PEBBLE BEACH, California (Reuters) - Britain's Graeme McDowell held his nerve in difficult scoring conditions to end a 40-year title drought by Europeans at the U.S. Open with a one-shot victory on Sunday.

Three strokes behind his American playing partner Dustin Johnson going into the final round, the Northern Irishman carded a three-over-par 74 at Pebble Beach Golf Links for a level total of 284.
