Mickelson to return in time for US Open - report

US golfer Phil Mickelson will return to the PGA Tour at Memphis next week and then tee it up at the US Open at Bethpage, Golf World reported on Monday.

Mickelson, ranked number two in the world, had put his season on hold less than a fortnight ago when he revealed that his wife, Amy, had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Golf World reported that Amy Mickelson's expected surgery wouldn't be scheduled until at least late June and that Mickelson will play in Memphis and in the US Open, the second major championship of the year, which starts on June 18.

His schedule after that will depend upon his wife's progress.

Mickelson said on his website last week that he was optimistic the illness had been caught early.

"We are anxiously waiting for a number of test results that will help guide us in the best possible direction," he said.
